The mosquitoes here this year are bad, really bad. I have been to Alaska a few times and Canada's Arctic during the summer, those were the worst and largest mosquitoes I have ever experienced but this is running a close second for me.
We have a pond and a slow creek on our property that is prime mosquito-raising terrain which is hard for us to control. The creek is constantly moving and the pond is full of fish. Also, our bees get water from the pond so I cannot add anything to that except maybe those little barley things that float.
There's nesting boxes for the swallows and a bat house too in our backyard. I would hate to think what it would be like if we didn't have those.
I was trying to plant yesterday evening and was eaten alive by mosquitoes. Later we had some elk show up at our pond and you could tell that they were being pestered by the bloodsuckers, too. They jumped, bucked and eventually just gave up and took off running. I felt their pain.
We have very few mosquitos here. It is the ticks that are more of a bother.

DeleteWe do have some ticks here but I've only seen one on my dog in the 3 years I have owned him.
It's interesting you mentioned ticks, I wonder if that's what affected your hog. Tick paralysis in dogs isn't uncommon at all maybe same thing could happen to your pig.

Those battery operated OFF mosquito repellers work well for me. You can clip it right on your belt but the refills are expensive. I just don't like smearing bug spray all over myself. Home depot sells citranella plants or maybe get some seeds online. Good luck with them little flyin vampires ;)

DeleteNow I have used the citronella candles on our deck last year when we had a get together during Memorial day and they worked pretty well. But everyone got a lickin' when they left the deck! :D

I've heard that Muscovy ducks are prodigious mosquito eaters. It sounds like you've got the territory for them.
ReplyDeleteI would love to try Moscovy ducks because they are so good eating too. We would just have to protect them from our other pest, coyotes. I heard guinea hens are good for pest control, too. My chickens are too slow for mosquitoes but since we got them the number of hobo spiders that make it into our house has been reduced by over 90%.

There's one thing I cannot tolerate (okay, there's more than one, but...) and that's mosquitoes. You poor dear -- can't get much work done with those things bothering you!
